php.ini does have extension = session
and not extension=session.so
so the module is not loaded.

correct there is no extension=session.so at all. So it's a wrong bug
description.
IIRC the postinstall script of the modules enables the extension.
So session.so should be added to the php.ini.CSW I guess.
