9.01, no longer dumps core like 9.00 but causes *other* programs using the
X server to crash, so it's really no better and also not fit for release. 
I might be able to disable its use of X-fonts and avoid the problem but
it's more work that I shouldn't have to do.  Beats me how after 20 years of
colouring pixels on a display anyone can write a program this fragile.
