not enogh space in /var/tmp

There is not enough place in /var/tmp to run checkpkg on texlive_common
(big package: gzipe almost 1Gb...). Is there a way to make some place in
it (maybe the double of the current 2.7 Gb) as I cannot give an
alternative directory to work in
(.buildsys/v2/lib/python/collect_pkg_metadata.py does not read TMPDIR
environment variable to use an alternative directoryas it should)
