They might but needn't and maybe shouldn't.  My exim works with
/usr/sendmail in place although it needs manual "svcadm disable
sendmail" to get access to port 25.

A reason not to move system files might be that system patches can't
work.  e.g. If you move sendmail, patch it, move it back you have an
unpatched sendmail (or maybe an error in the patch process, not sure,
I've never actually done it).
