I don't have an answer to your question, but I'm thinking about
providing a 'split' ruby package. On solaris 8, I'd build with gcc4
as it is now. On 9 (and thus the package for 10), I'd use SOS12,
which can apparently build ruby cleanly. This would allow me to meet
my need to have ruby packages for sol8 still while providing you a
cleaner target to build against for the officially supported

 My fingers are crossed that we'll be getting a new platform to run
our RoR apps, so this personal need may disappear soon too.
