That is possible, yes.  The end result should be better recipes though.

If GAR doesn't detect a specific variable in the environment, it
re-execs itself with a clean environment plus this value?  This should
be done before anything else is executed.  A better place to do it
would be within mgar though, which would give it (another!) advantage
over running GAR directly via gmake.
