Gnome works fine when I login to the file server, but when I try it on the workstation I get the following errors "The files that contain your preference settings are currently in use." "Cannot resolve the address xml:readonly:/opt/csw/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory in the configuration file /opt/csw/etc/gconf/2/path" "Failed: Could not make directory /opt/csw/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory: Read-only file system" The directory gconf.xml.mandatory exists and is readable. If I edit gconf/2/path and comment out the xml:readonly: line I get the same error for gconf.xml.defaults, which also exists. Commenting out both xml:readonly: lines there are no more errors and the session starts but without panels, just a blank desktop with a couple of icons, I guess because no defaults are loaded. Why is the gnome session trying to create these directories? They are supposed to be "xml:readonly". I have only tried the new Gnome for a short time, but it feels faster than Sun's Gnome 2.0 even though I'm running it over the network (NFS). It seems faster at switching desktops, but some programs are slower. Font rendering seems to slow down things. Changing the Font Rendering to Monochrome (default is Best Shapes) improves performance a bit but not quite. For example, doing a "cd /usr/bin; ls -l" on csw's gnome-terminal takes about 5 seconds longer than with Sun's gnome-terminal. Thanks for xfig! When I start it up it complains about not finding the app-defaults file, and it starts with the "ugly" colorless interface. This is what I did to "fix" it: # Install the app-defaults files cd /opt/csw/share/xfig/ cp Fig Fig-color /opt/csw/lib/X11/app-defaults/ # make a xfig wrapper - either replace xfig or # create a new "xfig-color" command. # In my case I replaced xfig: cd /opt/csw/bin cp xfig xfig-3.2.4 # xfig wrapper script #!/bin/sh # Wrapper for xfig-3.2.4 XFILESEARCHPATH=/opt/csw/lib/X11/%T/%N%C:/usr/openwin/lib/%T/%N%C export XFILESEARCHPATH exec /opt/csw/bin/xfig-3.2.4 -xrm "*customization: -color" "$@" Maybe there's an easier/cleaner way to enable the color interface but the above works fine for me. You have to make a local copy, on every client, of the gconf directories gconf.xml.defaults and gconf.xml.mandatory (about 15 MB) Put them for instance in /etc/csw/gconf and make symlinks from /opt/csw/etc/gconf mkdir -p /etc/csw/gconf cd /opt/csw/etc/gconf tar cf - gconf.xml.defaults gconf.xml.mandatory | \ (cd /etc/csw/gconf; tar xf -) mv gconf.xml.defaults gconf.xml.defaults.CSW ln -s /etc/csw/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults mv gconf.xml.mandatory gconf.xml.mandatory.CSW ln -s /etc/csw/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory Remember to update these files on the clients anytime you upgrade gnome on the NFS server. If I can get a list, I can add it to be deleted in a custom jumpstart setup. 2) Is there a simple way to remove all deps to evolution (and evolution)? I have a setup where the gnome libs on the solaris machine have problems having another set provided by the CSW packages needed for evolution? Here's my dirty hack to check to remove all sun gnome packages # pkginfo | grep GNOME | cut -d' ' -f7 On a working system, this comes up to be: # pkginfo | grep GNOME| cut -d' ' -f7|wc -l 142 This should print off the list of Sun installed gnome packages. It could be conflicts with the old .g* configuration files in your account. Create a brand new test account, with an empty directory and see if gnome works for that account. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. --Albert Einstein From delrio at mie.utoronto.ca Wed Apr 28 15:51:33 2004 From: delrio at mie.utoronto.ca (Oscar del Rio) Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2004 09:51:33 -0400 Subject: [csw-users] Gnome 2.6 installation on NFS server In-Reply-To: <20040428124319.GJ27407@sperrstunde.at> References: <20040423142235.GN29726@sperrstunde.at> <408933AC.3050603@mie.utoronto.ca> <20040427074522.GG8586@sperrstunde.at> <408E503F.7090504@mie.utoronto.ca> <20040427140559.GK12522@sperrstunde.at> <408E70DB.6080601@mie.utoronto.ca> <20040427152128.GM12522@sperrstunde.at> <408E95FB.8020600@mie.utoronto.ca> <20040428124319.GJ27407@sperrstunde.at> Message-ID: <408FB6E5.2040608@mie.utoronto.ca> > SESSION_MANAGER=local/pc6154-c703:/tmp/.ICE-unix/7385,tcp/pc6154-c703:49684 > ld.so.1: /opt/csw/bin/gnome-session: fatal: relocation error: file > /opt/csw/bin/gnome-session: symbol g_str_has_prefix: referenced symbol not > found Some of your libraries need upgrading, but no idea which one(s). I tryed to start gnome-session in failsave mode and got the following error message: SESSION_MANAGER=local/pc6154-c703:/tmp/.ICE-unix/7385,tcp/pc6154-c703:49684 ld.so.1: /opt/csw/bin/gnome-session: fatal: relocation error: file /opt/csw/bin/gnome-session: symbol g_str_has_prefix: referenced symbol not found any idea? thanks, daniel -- Daniel K. Gebhart, -- http://dkg.con-fuse.org/ A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. "ldd gnome-session" lists 60 libraries, 40 of them from CSW. Try upgrading all CSW packages from blastwave. What OS are you running? If it is Solaris 9 or earlier, apply all the Recommended patches from Sun (there are no patches for Solaris 10 as it has not been officially released yet) From sloewenthal at gemini.edu Thu Apr 29 18:06:16 2004 From: sloewenthal at gemini.edu (LOEWENTHAL Simon) Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2004 12:06:16 -0400 Subject: [csw-users] CSW PHP - php.ini Message-ID: Hi all, Does the CSW php distribution come with a php.ini? Reason is that I have just installed Squirrel Mail and it says that a setting must be changed in the pho.ini file, but since I can't find it in the /opt/csw/apache or in the Squirrel Mail directory, I think that it should be part of the PHP dist. Am I wrong, and can someone enlighten me?
