pbzip2 0.9.6 is now available on /testing (this is a new CSW package).

PBZIP2 is a parallel implementation of the bzip2 block-sorting file
compressor that uses pthreads and achieves near-linear speedup on SMP
machines. The output of this version is fully compatible with bzip2
v1.0.2 (ie: anything compressed with pbzip2 can be decompressed with bzip2).

It is simply great: its speedup against bzip2 is linear to the number of
processors or cores of the system, e.g. on a dual sparc processor
machine it compresses a file in half the time of the standard bzip2, and
it produces a fully backward compatible .bz2 archive. Same gain is
achieved on machines having single processor with dual core like intel
centrino duo.

Once you try it, you'll forget the old bzip2.
