This is on a Blade 2500 running Solaris 10 U2, all
free patches.  My 
environment is Gnome 2.6 from Sun.  I have, trying to
get all the libs 
running correctly, downloaded the entire Gnome 2.14,
but I do not use 
it 
as my desktop environment.

Oh...no. The GNOME 2.14.3 build is not ready for full
production use. I still have a few packages to
rebuild.
Use the stable GNOME 2.8 or one included with Solaris.

The newer pango/cairo work with the new GNOME.
