Ok, now I have a gnome 2.8 installation from stable
with gtk_engines and libcairo from testing
and - I cross my fingers - it seems to run. Every
application is
crying over the missing pangocairo library but running
anyway and
a normal gnome user doesn't see the errors.

I tried updating the libpango package, too but this is
does not work
for
the gnome from stable. Fatal errors about missing
symbols (from
libgtk2, I
think).

Many thanks, Meik

Ok, and it seems James provided you with a revised
2.6.5 package as well. Use James' package as the
official fix for the stable GNOME.
