From bonivart at opencsw.org Mon Dec 15 14:08:20 2008 From: bonivart at opencsw.org (Peter Bonivart) Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2008 14:08:20 +0100 Subject: [csw-users] pkgutil 1.3 released Message-ID: <625385e30812150508h2fa5d31by6a6b2d5fe4ebb485@mail.gmail.com> Finally I have released version 1.3 of pkgutil. It includes some bug fixes and small changes as well as bigger features like the new exclude option to skip packages when installing for example. The feature that took the most work was the new stream option where you can build a package stream for any package(s) for any architecture and release complete with dependencies. Could be interesting if you have machines with no internet connectivity or if you want a standard set of packages on a bunch of machines. As usual you will find ways to use it I never thought of. :-) New is also the workdir option that makes some operations possible for non-root users, of course not operations that require pkgadd/pkgrm but pretty much everything else. Another change is that the default config file (pkgutil.conf) is now located in /opt/csw/etc but if you have a pkgutil.conf in /etc/opt/csw it will override the default file on a setting-per-setting basis. Here's the change log for 1.3: * v1.3. Released 2008-12-12 - New option -x (exclude) to exclude packages (Ihsan Dogan) - New option -s (stream) to build a custom package (Dagobert Michelsen) - New option -T (target) to set architecture and release for package stream (-s) - New option -o (output) names the package stream from -s (Dagobert Michelsen) - New option -W (workdir) to set another directory to use for downloads. Some operations are now possible without being root - Option -f (force) renamed to -y (yes) (Dagobert Michelsen) - Make config file more NFS/read-only friendly (Dagobert Michelsen) - Changed default mirror from unstable to current (Dagobert Michelsen) - Fixed bug which caused a warning to be displayed during some upgrades - Fixed that locally cached packages are also MD5 checked (Dennis Clarke) - PATH added to -V (syscheck) output - Wget and Perl binaries added to -V - Documented admin file in perldoc/man page - Several changes in bldcat to improve speed (Dagobert Michelsen) - bldcat supports the description file (Dagobert Michelsen) - chkcat in verbose mode benefits from the same speed fix as in bldcat - chkcat now checks for missing dependencies The (new) wiki site is updated with 1.3 info but I will add more examples of the new features a.s.a.p. You can find a few by doing "perldoc pkgutil" or "man pkgutil". http://pkgutil.wikidot.com/ While I've been working on 1.3 the list for 1.4 just grew longer and longer...thanks for the support. :-) -- /peter From phil at bolthole.com Tue Dec 16 01:06:24 2008 From: phil at bolthole.com (Philip Brown) Date: Mon, 15 Dec 2008 16:06:24 -0800 Subject: [csw-users] pkg-get v4.0 release Message-ID: <20081216000624.GA36337@bolthole.com> Hello, CSW users! I'm happy to announce that pkg-get v4.0, is finally being released as a CSW package. It has sat in testing for quite a while. Although I havent had any positive feedback, I havent had any negative feedback either, so here it is :-) This is a long-delayed release, that finally makes public, features that were added way back in march 2008, but were not publically released until now. One of which is the use of the -v flag, to tell you how much data will be downloaded for an install The following shows how many packages and bytes will be downloaded, for installing firefox, on a raw untouched machine: $ pkg-get -v -i firefox DEBUG-ONLY/VERBOSE MODE: level=1 No existing install of CSWfirefox found. Installing... CSWfirefox firefox 18375313 bytes CSWbonobo2 libbonobo2 1850648 bytes [46 packages snipped.... ] CSWopencdk opencdk 139569 bytes CSWreadline readline 645533 bytes CSWossldevel openssl_devel 4051705 bytes CSWosslutils openssl_utils 309635 bytes The -v flag also works for "update" mode... However, "recursive update" has not been implemented yet, at this time. There are additional safety checks I wish to work out, before making that sort of thing automatic. Example output of current behaviour, where pkg-get shows ONLY the dependancies that are out of date for the desired firefox update: # pkg-get -v -u firefox DEBUG-ONLY/VERBOSE MODE: level=1 CSWfirefox firefox 18375313 bytes CSWlibxml2 libxml2 1528032 bytes CSWreadline readline 645533 bytes # pkg-get -u firefox will still bomb out complaining about out of date depdendancies. But on the brighter side, you can now explicitly know just how MANY are out of date beforehand, with the -v flag. Additionally, and it will now warn you about out-of-date-ness, BEFORE pkgrm'ing the currently installed firefox package. The sample output of out-of-date dependancies, also gives you the information you would need to manually update just the packages required for firefox. In the above case, you can put together a commandline in reverse order, # pkg-get -u readline libxml2 firefox and that will go through and update all the required packages for firefox in one shot. By projects i refer to Blastwave and OpenCSW by the way. Both are recovering from the split in order to continue what they were set out to do in the first place: Provide packages for Solaris. You and i, as well as all the users out there are free to stick with either project. Choose criteria that suit you (package availability, helpfulness when you hit a bug in a package, or which project name you like better, up to you). Same goes for the package installation tool of your choice (pkg-get, pkgutil), even though it is an easier call with this one as you can easily use both on the same system. So whether you prefer pkgutil over pkg-get or not, doesn't really matter. Both are moving along and you can just pick your favorite. :) IMHO that's good news for all of us.
