I had the problem similar to one described here: http://www.mail-archive.com/help-gplusplus at gnu.org/msg01525.html /usr/ccs/bin/as failed with "", line XXXXX : Internal: Out of symbol table error. But this only happens when '-pipe' GCC switch is used. Looks like Solaris as bug. > More precisely, this version should work on Solaris 10 U8 and up. So you must have e.g. libct.so in what /opt/csw/sybase/OCS-12_5/lib points to or LD_LIBRARY_PATH points to. > And, "/opt/csw/lib/perl/site_perl/DBD/Sybase.pm" does NOT exist...That's weird! I even un-installed both; pm_dbd_sybase_freetds and pm_dbd_sybase_ocs and re-installed them. Still Sybase.pm is not there and ldd gives below errors. The ldd errors are unrelated to the non-existence of Sybase.pm, as we cannot distribute the Sybase libs due to license issues manual adjustment is required here. Regarding the non-existence of Sybase.pm please try pkginfo -l CSWpm-dbd-sybase-freetds pkgchk CSWpm-dbd-sybase-freetds and grep CSWpm-dbd-sybase-freetds /var/sadm/install/contents and post the results. I'm still pulling from the "current" release which has seen no updates for some time. It is unclear whether current and dublin are identical, but I have been assuming that they are. My best understanding is that volatile "testing" packages later move into "unstable", and then finally migrate to kiel, which is scheduled as the next full package release. Is that correct? When kiel goes live, will it become the new "current" repository? But from comments made on some of the above referenced pages, it looks like a number of packages may be dropped from the kiel release as compared to dublin. Is that also correct? And finally, it looks like a number of user-oriented, non-server packages (for example, gimp) are no longer being maintained. Is that correct? I think an expanded discussion of these issues placed on the "release branches" page would be helpful. My inability to really understand what the current philosophy is with CSW is making me reluctant to update, as I do not feel confident that if I do so, everything I currently rely upon will continue to work. Any clarification would be appreciated. -- C. I'm sorry to hear that. We put some effort into documenting branches, so it's an important piece of information. If I understand correctly, you looked at these pages: http://www.opencsw.org/2012/01/which-catalog-should-i-use/ http://www.opencsw.org/category/announcements/ http://www.opencsw.org/get-it/releases/ > I'm still pulling from the "current" release which has seen no updates for > some time. It is unclear whether current and dublin are identical, but I > have been assuming that they are. Yes. 'current' is a symlink to 'testing' and 'testing' is a symlink to 'dublin'. > My best understanding is that volatile "testing" packages later move into > "unstable", and then finally migrate to kiel, TL;DR we use the Debian model No, this is quite different. - Packages freshly built by maintainers go to 'unstable'. - Periodically, packages are integrated from unstable to a named release; in December 2012 this release is 'kiel'; we no longer integrate into 'dublin'. - The 'testing' symlink points at the named release into which we integrate (target state) We currently have a situation in which we would like to point 'testing' at kiel, but we can't do it just yet. We intend dublin to become the new stable, but we just deprecated the legacy branch and we want to give users time to notice. http://www.opencsw.org/2012/11/stable-declared-dead/ Once this is out of the way (say, 3-6 months), we will point the 'stable' symlink at dublin and the 'testing' symlink at kiel. > which is scheduled as the > next full package release. Is that correct? When kiel goes live, will it > become the new "current" repository? No, 'current' is an old name, now meaningless, and will be deleted. > But from comments made on some of the > above referenced pages, it looks like a number of packages may be dropped > from the kiel release as compared to dublin. Is that also correct? Yes, you can look at what is there in unstable. We want to shed as much of dead weight as possible. If a package isn't maintained, it dies. If someone really wants it, we'll encourage people to build the package. Historically the approach at OpenCSW was to keep everything, but this is now changing, as we realize how many packages in the catalog are unmaintained and unusable. > And > finally, it looks like a number of user-oriented, non-server packages (for > example, gimp) are no longer being maintained. Is that correct? Yes, we are forced to economize and have decided to chose server software as the primary focus. But there is a number of packages (as Carsten noted) which some maintainers care about, and these will be maintained as long as there is interest. > I think an expanded discussion of these issues placed on the "release > branches" page would be helpful. My inability to really understand what > the current philosophy is with CSW is making me reluctant to update, as I > do not feel confident that if I do so, everything I currently rely upon > will continue to work. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks for the suggestion, I will update the release branches page. If I could suggest something, I'd be subscribing to a named release. There are only two to choose from at the moment: dublin and kiel. The former will eventually become 'stable', so if you want to use the 'stable' branch in production (when it's reinstated), I recommend that one. Note that it will receive no updates, except for potential security updates. I guess this is expected from a stable branch. It is just a wrapper around the underlying pkgadd and pkgrm tools provided by Solaris. If pkgadd fails but exits cleanly, pkgutil will just carry on. It is just a wrapper around the underlying pkgadd and pkgrm tools provided by Solaris. If pkgadd fails but exits cleanly, pkgutil will just carry on. If an admin breaks things, again, there is nothing to be fine by pkgutil. The solution in cases such as these is to pkgrm the affected package and then ask pkgutil to install it again. Hth. If there is problem installing a package - say a directory cannot be created - Pkgutil still finishes, but the package is not functional or an admin mistakenly deletes a couple of files needed by a package, by mistake. Well, the package does not work, but guess what? The package has been installed so it is impossible to reinstall or update because pkgutil sees that the system has an up-to-date package installed. Is there no way to fix this? Can pkgutil be told to update or install the package anyway? The link is referring to the old site, sorry about that. It explained some things that are shown in the examples, I guess we could add that to fix it. Not sure if we have archived the old site though. Is there something specific you're wondering about right now? /peter From George.Wyche at pw.utc.com Mon Dec 31 23:32:44 2012 From: George.Wyche at pw.utc.com (Wyche, George PW) Date: Mon, 31 Dec 2012 17:32:44 -0500 Subject: [csw-users] "old" packages not in latest catalog Message-ID: <239E996F5C620A4E8A369B7D818326B2045B7C5D@PUSMNEI1.pwemail.us> I don't know the best way to handle the absence of required libraries that were in old catalogs, but now missing. ---- motivation: We have a program on a solaris8 sparc workstation that is supported by gcc4gfortranrt of 2009 from openCSW and all is fine. I know for a fact that an older solaris10 sparc got /opt/csw/gcc4/lib/libgfortran.so.3 from CSWgcc4gfortranrt and the program is running great. I am happy to say we finally got Solaris10u10 freshly installed on a sparc (though not internet connected). I managed to create a directory for sparc/5.10/ with loads of *pkg.gz and the catalog and descriptions. I configured pkgutil to access that directory "top" and installed many packages. I have a genuine, self made package for the above desired program, but it won't start because there is no libgfortran.so.*. Alas, there is no CSWgcc4gfortranrt in the catalog. So what is the best thing for me to do? That old package CSWgcc4gfortranrt is sitting right here, but it is not in the catalog. Many temptations are here, but I am sure that I should know more before taking any further steps. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Last of all, I'm wishing openCSW good luck in 2013. I already posted a question which was some motivation for my looking into the catalog format. What *is* on the catalog-format page gives me some direction about arranging for the perl script to work for me with the packages I am making. However, when I find something like this "broken" on the page, then I become less excited, because, "If this is broken, then what else may be wrong?" I'm headed off. I'm the last one here and I don't like being at the extreme of anything.... because it happens too often. See 'ya next year. George Wyche
