I can't reproduce your problem, I tried the same command with the
testing catalog and it happily transformed the same package and
completed the command.

Do you actually have that exact file there?

# ls -l /var/opt/csw/pkgutil/packages/libgcj15-4.9.2,REV=2014.11.07-SunOS5.10-i386-CSW.pkg.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 75210106 Nov 25 2014
/var/opt/csw/pkgutil/packages/libgcj15-4.9.2,REV=2014.11.07-SunOS5.10-i386-CSW.pkg.gz

# digest -a md5
/var/opt/csw/pkgutil/packages/libgcj15-4.9.2,REV=2014.11.07-SunOS5.10-i386-CSW.pkg.gz
b7d905ed5cb4fcb7c7f9d8e3c0f1c951

If that matches, what happens if you do:

# cd /var/opt/csw/pkgutil/packages
# /bin/gzip -c -f -d
./libgcj15-4.9.2,REV=2014.11.07-SunOS5.10-i386-CSW.pkg.gz |
/bin/pkgtrans /dev/fd/0 . all

That's exactly the command pkgutil does when it fails for you.
