The plain "sun" driver worked for me, and I used this initially for some<br>
months. Later I installed decided to check out OSS, and that what I'm<br>
still using today.<br>

To be honest I have no idea what "sun" is, or how it works, but it<br>
worked for me out of the box. If that's not working for you, I can at<br>
least confirm that OSS also works under solaris/mplayer.<br>
