<p>I was wondering how much work would it be to build the world with a different prefix. Companies will probably have arbitrary rules about where you can install packages. If we made it possible to build the world in a custom prefix, many organizations would benefit from it. I started a test build like that in a VM, and I plan on having a stab at it, just because it's interesting.</p>

<p>If there are other people who are thinking about it, and would be willing to spend some time testing such builds, let me know. If there is interest and we join forces, we have a better chance of succeeding. The success could be defined as a set of packages (coreutils, etc) that successfully build under a custom prefix, and work.</p>
