Wrong answer. You are supposed to say "I have software foo which requires PNG 1.5" or at minimum can even use 1.5. 1.5 is incompatible with 1.2 so if I update to 1.5 all of our existing software (as far as I've checked which was several) will need patching to use either 1.5 or 1.2 which is the easy patch. Think, if the upstream writers haven't updated to 1.5 why do you think you can or should? I decided not to force maintainers to patch just to continue using the 1.2 until there was a case that required it. I am subscribed to the PNG mailing list so am fully aware of update notifications. It's "better than nothing", but I thought cups was supposed to be so wonderfully easy to use? (I dont use it, which is why I found myself in need of documentation.. and then said "the heck with this" when I did not fight straightforward docs for it) If it's so wonderfully easy, shouldnt it be "easy" for you to throw together a couple of lines saying, "here are the steps you need to do to point your cupsclient at a working cupsd back end" ? I dunno whether it is or not, I still havent figured out a simple way to use it :p (and as a reply to your last comment: I vaguely recall lpadmin not functioning as normal, which is why I tore the packages off my workstation, after giving it an initial try. but that was some time ago.) To me, this seems like another example of, "ignore something, *just because its Phil saying it*". Or is it that because I described a large difficulty I had using the package in the past, you describe it as "ranting"? So users need to be careful not to describe having large difficulties with packages, or you'll close the bug? "How do I use this thing", is a very normal concern. The more complex or non standard a thing is, the more important it is for us to provide a carefully marked pointer to a trail. You just writing "read the docs" for a complex package, leaves a gap in the user experience If there was a nice straightforward preexisting guide of "here's how to get started with minimum hassle", then it would be fine for you to provide a url, or file reference. But you didnt. Maybe because, last time I checked, there isnt one. If you *know* of one, please reference it. If there isnt... then could you please take 5 minutes to help out new users to get started with cups client? You seem to imply this should be configurable without the web interface, and usable via lpadmin. So how about just putting in a ONE LINE example that, according to you, should work? I previously tried it. it didnt work for me. which is why as an "opencsw user", I asked you, the package maintainer, for a better (specific) reference for use of the client package. 2011-06-13 22:41 https://www.opencsw.org/mantis/view.php?id=4785#c9116 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Used pkgutil to install the new syslog-ng package on to a Solaris 10u9 sparc box. Dependences were found correctly and everything went smoothly on the install. Once the install finished the service came online automatically since I already had a syslog-ng.conf placed in the /etc/opt/csw directory. I did notice that the package name is syslog_ng, with an underscore. As well as the service name being, cswsyslog_ng, with an underscore. I've usually seen the name with a dash, so I just thought I'd point that out, in case it may confuse people while looking for 'syslog-ng' with pkgutil, as they wouldn't find the package. Anyway, besides that everything looks great! You win an "BOFH" award! Your oh-so-cleverly-disguised [google it] reference, exactly justified my complaint here. The first hit, points to a fairly long document, http://blogs.oracle.com/DanX/entry/using_cups_print_server_for which **does not tell you how to set up cupsclient** without also having the full webserver admin thing. Nor does the second hit. So are you going to include actually useful documentation in the cupsclient package now? If you want to actually be helpful to our users, it would be good to either have the readme say, "you need to install [the cups webadmin package] to do stuff", or provide a simple example/link on how to admin cupsclient from the command line. Just saying "use lpadmin" would not be very helpful, since most new solaris users have difficulty using it, and need a concise example/reference to use it. For now, I would recommend setting up a managed database: http://wiki.opencsw.org/checkpkg#toc5 It doesn't have to be mysql, it could be as well a sqlite database, it's about the way you manage it (on demand vs automatically). We can also work together (me - coding, you - testing), to make the off-buildfarm use case work again. What do you think? Probably by printing an error ("You seem to be running checkpkg on a non-buildfarm host ...") which can be acknowledged by a ~/.garrc setting so that users are aware of the issue. I could implement this. Regarding testing I can surely give checkpkg a spin on a Solaris 10 x86 box every now and then and provide feedback. If there's more needed, it could be worth talking to jMCg on #opencsw who currently has the specific use case of building packages outside of the farm. He might be willing to tag team the feature. I'm attaching a patch which adds more logging: it displays what catalog name was requested, and what are the available ones. It still propagates the exception, so there will be a stack trace at the end, but above the stack trace, there will be a bit of useful information. The catalog release is set around line 61 of gar.pkg.mk: http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/gar/browser/csw/mgar/gar/v2/gar.pkg.mk#L61 You could try setting that variable to 'current' in .garrc. Regarding to http://www.mail-archive.com/maintainers[AT]lists.opencsw.org/msg06843.html (grrr ... replace [AT] by @ to make this link work ... this was needed due to horrible formatting of the URL by Mantis), mbregex is supposed to be in the main package php5, but was somehow left out when packaging it. Anyways, thanks for your help.
