Here's the alternatives package for you to test:

To address the concern that the executable name is long: it's not
going to be typed by humans.  It will be used by postinstall scripts
(or class action scripts).

It's the Debian's alternatives system, cut out from the dpkg source
tarball.  How do you like it?
