That should probably work.  Some packages may need some fixes to their
build scripts to bring them in line.  Some stuff developed on Linux
assumes that they are there, or that a library isn't there if the .la
file isn't, but IMHO, that's a bug anyway.  It also can make static
linking a pain, but that's rarely required when using a package
manager.
