[csw-maintainers] binutils and the .a files

Are the .a files necessary in the binutils package? In some cases, the
.a files have to be present, for example libgcc.a and libgcc_eh.a in
the gcc packages.

The current binutils package contains e.g. libiberty.a:

Does anyone know if the .a files are used?
