I just checked it again:

 1. took 2.3 and created a trivial install with 3 users
 2. sent 2 mails to each user
 3. simply upgraded to 2.4 (pkgutil -u)

I did not see any errors so far. Let me know if I did something wrong in the
process.

Yep, because sendmail is using 4.8, and sendmail is using sasl, thus I
thought having the same bdb is a good idea.
