I don't know if it helps or gives some consolation, but I just had a glance at
the Fedora SRPM for python 3.3.0. They use a patch which replaces 'lib' by
'lib64' in following files

 Lib/distutils/command/install.py
 Lib/distutils/sysconfig.py
 Lib/site.py
 Lib/sysconfig.py
 Lib/test/test_site.py
 Makefile.pre.in
 Modules/getpath.c
 setup.py
