I think we were still building for Solaris 8 until shortly before that
(measured in years). We stopped supporting Solaris 8 in March 2010. A
year and a half. An eye blink.

There were people in the project who wanted it that way. It's
somewhere in the list archives, but I searched for a few minutes and
couldn't find it.
