I'll explore a new release to remove this from teTex which depends or should depend on texinfo. Or just add an override of the check? The issue has been there for a long time and CSWtexinfo is the correct package. It would be most useful to just override the test and say "texinfo is the correct package". > Neither sound good to me. > I'll wait until tetex update is ready first. Umh.... no. Given the size of the package it will take 3-4 weeks to finish (Peter: right?) and I fixed the bug due to user request on the same day he reported the bug. It would be bad to stall now for "technical" reasons. CSWpmlogmessage should be removed from the catalog. CSWperl has current version 0.02, CSWpmlogmessage is older (0.01) and is actually a downgrade. Unlikely to ever be upgraded, 0.02 is from 2008. 2. CSWpmmodcorelist should be removed from the catalog. CSWperl has 2.18, current is 2.39, CSWpmmodcorelist is 2.26. 2.18 is only a year old so it's likely not critical to have a newer version than that. Only package needing it is CSWpmcpanplus. If someone ever requests a newer version we could deal with it then. 3. CSWpmcpanplus should be removed from the catalog. CSWperl has 0.88, CSWpmcpanplus is 0.076, current is 0.9007. Our package is a downgrade and should be either removed or upgraded immediately. I suggest removal since that solves the collisions and there's no packages needing it. I ran checkpkg myself, here are the results: http://paste.pocoo.org/show/271808/ There is a couple of Emacs, Perl, Python and Ruby files in the package, so checkpkg suggests adding dependencies, but I guess in this case you don't care if something like /opt/csw/share/texmf-dist/doc/latex/shapepar/proshap.py can't be used. It showed a couple of surplus dependencies, I think some of them might be actually not needed, but I don't have enough information to be sure which ones. I didn't see the false positives on text files in /usr/share (.pm, .py, etc. aside). I'm glad you asked! submitpkg is a tool that takes files from /home/experimental/${LOGNAME}, copies them to bender and formats an e-mail that you can then send to the release manager. It's installed on the buildfarm, so once your files are in /home/experimental/${LOGNAME}, you can say: submitpkg -c catalogname ...to copy your files to /home/newpkgs on bender and format the e-mail. It'll also display instructions, what to do next. You mean, the shared libraries? The same reason as with all other shared libraries: there are binaries linking to them, and removing shared objects would break these binaries. I don't know exactly what kind of functionality they provide to other binaries, perhaps with Python 2.5 not installed any more, the Python-related functionality wouldn't work. Or maybe it's some kind of API that allows to process .py files, so the functionality would still work. But it doesn't matter that much; in either case the shared library is required for other binaries to do runtime linking. I was going to say 'since packages needing the lib only depend on CSWpython, I dont see the point in splitting this out', but I just realized the point: you donthave to re-upload the same old lib when you do updates of python this way. Dependencies still get a little hairy, though. This is reminicent of the old "python_rt" package that we USED to have. packages used to depend on THAT, but not the core python package. We might want to redo dependency trees for this. if we were starting fresh, I might say have the shared libs depend on CSWpython. But since older packages only depend on CSWpython now, it will be a requirement for CSWpython, to pull in shared lib(s) as deps. Circular deps arent allowed, so that wont work. >From now on, (unmodified) checkpkg would only detect a needed dependency on the libpython package, not CSWpython any more. Yes, it'll contain almost exactly the same files, but won't be called a runtime package any more, since in the case of Python, the interpreter is the runtime, from the point of view of Python programs. > packages used to > depend on THAT, but not the core python package. > We might want to redo dependency trees for this. > if we were starting fresh, I might say have the shared libs depend on CSWpython. > But since older packages only depend on CSWpython now, it will be a > requirement for CSWpython, to pull in shared lib(s) as deps. Circular > deps arent allowed, so that wont work. Dependencies will, ahem, depend on package contents. If there's a Python module that has a shared object linking against libpython, it'll need to depend on both CSWpython and CSWlibpython*. Each dependency for a different reason: *.py files need the interpreter, *.so files need libpython2.x.so.1.0. > >From now on, (unmodified) checkpkg would only detect a needed > dependency on the libpython package, not CSWpython any more. What's > the plan to handle that sort of thing? This has already been taken care of, we don't need to modify checkpkg. The heuristic is that if a package contains *.py files, it requires the interpreter. When we release Python 2.7 and 3.1, things will get more complicated, we'll need to look at the file headers and distinguish between, say, #!/opt/csw/bin/python, #!/opt/csw/bin/python2.6, #!/opt/csw/bin/python2.7, #!/usr/bin/env python2.7, etc., to choose whether to depend on the generic CSWpython, or a specific CSWpython27, CSWpython31, etc. We'll also need not just py_foo, but more specifically py26_foo, py31_foo, etc. But I think I'm getting ahead of myself, as I haven't built 2.7 nor 3.1 yet. Back to the main topic, unmodified checkpkg already handles that, so there will be no issues with dependencies. BUt now there are two remaining issues, unfortunately: 1. the whole /opt/csw/lib/python2.6/site-packages thing 2. PKG name change. I've batched the libxslt* packages, but py_libxslt is still sitting in newpkgs because of above. Well, given that nothing depends on it, the PKG name change isnt so much of a big deal, now that I know about it. But have to see what Maciej says about the python2.6 thing now.
