Message-ID: <873bonvofg.fsf@mipc42.mathematik.uni-leipzig.de> I just discovered that the kile package (a KDE application, an integrated LaTeX environment) seems to be gone. (It already existed, I installed CSWkile half a year ago on another box.) My users are quite happy with Gnome but this is the one KDE application I have to deliver since nothing comparable seems to exist for Gnome. Any chances that it will come back? Is it possible to "re-pack" an installed package so I can copy it to another box, similar to Debians "dpkg-repack"? (I can use the list of files from "pkgchk -v" but perhaps a simpler way exists?) Or does someone know of a comparable Gnome application? Many thanks to the blastwave creators and contributors! I can't think of an easy way but once you have a list of packages and the information files in /var/sadm/pkg/CSWkile with some effort you should be able to use pkgtrans to convert the files back into a package. You might find an old copy of the package somewhere, some have been archived but I can't recall the URL. James. I updated all my blastwave stuff today including KDElibs, Qt etc. and kile from the old CSWkile package still runs fine (on Solaris9/Sparc). So at least I can't confirm this bug report. >I can't think of an easy way but once you have a list of packages >and the information files in /var/sadm/pkg/CSWkile with some effort >you should be able to use pkgtrans to convert the files back into a >package. The work around is to set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to be /opt/csw/kde-gcc/lib since you need the libqt-mt.so.3 that was compiled by gcc, not the one that was compiled by Sun cc. Interestingly enough, it's linked against both: bers ~ % ldd `which kile` | grep libqt libqt-mt.so.3 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8/libqt-mt.so.3 libqt-mt.so.3 => /opt/csw/kde-gcc/lib/libqt-mt.so.3 I'll sign up to maintain Kile. I can login with root but not user. If I commented out LD_LIBRARY_PATH, Gnome works. But that is unreasonable because many things are not working without LD_LIBRARY_PATH and a nuisance every each time I switch from KDE to Gnome or vice versa. Also, I discovered that after root login with KDE, the "Other's" write access privilege of /tmp/.ICE-unix will be turned off. Thus, preventing users to login with KDE. Granting the "Other's" write access to /tmp/.ICE-unix, users can login with KDE again. Is this a bug? It is free (GPL), written in Java and runs on all the usual platforms. I have been using it for quite some time on Solaris10 (Sparc) and Linux (i386) to have the same feeds everywhere - and it even translates my aggregations to HTML, so I can read even them on my cellphone :). Anyway, I installed the BlastWave Exim4, which came with SpamAssassin, and it pretty much worked right out of the box, with minimal fiddling. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but there is one issue which I've never seen before and it's causing one of my users some trouble. Every mail message has an extra "From" line in the headers. The first line in the message is still the normal From line: From sender at senderdomain.com Fri Sep 23 15:21:07 2005 but immediately following that line is another line which always begins with a ">" >From steve Fri Sep 23 15:21:07 2005 This second line always has the beginning ">" and it is always "from" the recipient. That is, all my messages are from "steve", all my department head's messages are from "marc", etc. This isn't a big problem for me because I use Pine, but my department head doesn't hold with these new-fangled mailers and is sticking with the old berkeley "mail". mail sees that ">" and considers that line to be the end of the headers, so none of his subjects, etc. show up in his mail listing. Does anyone have any idea where that extra line is coming from? The Alpha had been running Exim3 with no SpamAssassin and no procmail, and we never saw anything like that line. I have other machines using promail with other mailers, but again no SpamAssassin, and again, have never seen that line. That would make me suspect SpamAssassin, but I'm not convinced that it couldn't be Exim4 or procmail. Then, of course, once I determine which program is writing the line I can go bug the appropriate amiling list to see if there is a way to prevent it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! I think there's a problem with the blastwave shareable object versioning setup, at least for libssl.so and libcrypto.so. I am running into the following problem: A few months ago I compiled pubcookie (see http://www.pubcookie.org/about.html ). It uses libssl and libcrypto, and I built it to use /opt/csw/lib/lib{ssl,crypto}.so At that time, both libssl and libcrypto were version 0.9.7, so I got this... [djh900 at flix pubcookie-3.2.0]$ ldd \ /opt/pubcookie/current/login/index.cgi libssl.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 libcrypto.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 [...] libldap.so.2 => /opt/csw/lib/libldap.so.2 ... due to... [djh900 at flix pubcookie-3.2.1a]$ elfdump -d \ /opt/csw/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 | fgrep SONAME [7] SONAME 0x24f0 libssl.so.0.9.7 As you can see from the ldd above, pubcookie also depends on /opt/csw/lib/libldap.so.2. At the time pubcookie was built, libldap.so.2 used /opt/csw/lib/lib{ssl,crypto}.so.0.9.7 and it all worked. We recently updated /opt/csw/lib/libldap*, so now we have... [djh900 at flix pubcookie-3.2.0]$ ldd /opt/csw/lib/libldap.so.2 [...] libssl.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libssl.so.0.9.8 libcrypto.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 So now... [djh900 at flix pubcookie-3.2.1a]$ ldd -v \ /opt/pubcookie/current/login/index.cgi find object=libssl.so.0.9.7; required by /opt/pubcookie/3.2.0/login/index.cgi libssl.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 find object=libcrypto.so.0.9.7; required by /opt/pubcookie/3.2.0/login/index.cgi libcrypto.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 [...] find object=libssl.so.0.9.8; required by /opt/csw/lib/libldap.so.2 libssl.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libssl.so.0.9.8 find object=libcrypto.so.0.9.8; required by /opt/csw/lib/libldap.so.2 libcrypto.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 In other words, pubcookie now depends on both lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.7 and (through libldap) lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.8. What seems to be happening is that lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.7 is loaded first, which satisfies all the symbol references in pubcookie and libldap, so lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.8 never gets loaded. It appears that libldap.so.2 only works with lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.8, because when the latest libldap.so.2 was installed, 'ldaps://' URLs stopped working in pubcookie, but 'ldap://' kept on working. I can get around this temporarily by relinking pubcookie so it picks up lib{ssl,crypto}.0.9.8, but that's only good until the next update of libldap. Not a satisfactory state of affairs. Now look at this: [djh900 at flix pubcookie-3.2.1a]$ ldd /opt/csw/apache/bin/httpd [...] libssl.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libssl.so.0.9.7 libcrypto.so.0.9.7 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 [...] libssl.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libssl.so.0.9.8 libcrypto.so.0.9.8 => /opt/csw/lib/sparcv8plus/libcrypto.so.0.9.8 [...] i.e. it looks like the csw apache may have the same problem. I see that Red Hat have got around this by... [djh900 at dh ~]$ objdump -x /usr/lib/libssl.so| fgrep SONAME SONAME libssl.so.4 [djh900 at dh ~]$ ldd /usr/lib/libldap.so|fgrep libssl libssl.so.4 => /lib/libssl.so.4 (0x00269000) [djh900 at dh ~]$ ls -l /lib/libssl.so.4 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 Feb 28 2005 /lib/libssl.so.4 -> libssl.so.0.9.7a [djh900 at dh ~]$ In other words, things linked against libssl.so record a dependency on libssl.so.4, not libssl.0.9.x, so (assuming ABI compatibility etc), libssl can be updated, the libssl.so.4 symlink retargeted, and everything that uses libssl starts using the latest libssl. I think the csw libs need to do something similar. My users are quite happy with Gnome but this is the one KDE application I have to deliver since nothing comparable seems to exist for Gnome. Any chances that it will come back? I can't think of an easy way but once you have a list of packages and the information files in /var/sadm/pkg/CSWkile with some effort you should be able to use pkgtrans to convert the files back into a package. Thanks! There is the -f option and the man pages talks about: line, it will generate an additional `>From ' line to help distinguish fake mails. And a few other reference in the procmail docs. So I think procmail is doing it but I can't say straight off what you do to cure your problem. James. OK, thanks, that gives me far more direction to look than I had before. sg From javier.augusto at gmx.net Tue Sep 27 03:46:57 2005 From: javier.augusto at gmx.net (Javier O.
