Hi Chris,

The plain "sun" driver worked for me, and I used this initially for some 
months. Later I installed decided to check out OSS, and that what I'm 
still using today.

To be honest I have no idea what "sun" is, or how it works, but it 
worked for me out of the box. If that's not working for you, I can at 
least confirm that OSS also works under solaris/mplayer.
