If you're using the default Solaris printing then you might have a problem. I don't know though. It just seems like a possible reason to me. I don't claim to know anything about the inner workings of Evince. I know when I got to print in Evince it shows all the printers I have in my Cups server. We used to use the Cups that came on the Solaris Companion CD and used the instructions on this page to install it and get it running. http://www.lengers.com/?p=12 Since then we have updated to the CSW version of Cups and pretty much followed those instructions but with /opt/csw paths instead of /opt/sfw paths. I'm trying to capture the Sparc machine with Solaris 8 by WindowsXP with vnc client. In my servers, I'm using vnc-4_1_2-sparc_solaris.pkg package (download of http://www.realvnc.com/products/download.html) I prepare the routine below and include in /etc/profile #################################### cID=`id |cut -d"(" -f2|cut -d")" -f1` LOCAL=`w |grep $cID|awk '{print $2}'|grep console|wc -l` if [ $LOCAL -eq 1 ]; then PROC_VNC=`ps -ef |grep x0vncserver|sed -e "/grep x0vnc/d"|wc -l` if [ $PROC_VNC -ne 1 ]; then /apps/vnc/x0vncserver -PasswordFile=/apps/vnc/passwd & fi fi #################################### This routine check if the user are logged locally, if yes, start x0vncserver using the password in file /apps/vnc/passwd. *My problem*. If I'm using the default configuration in Solaris, when the machine is captured, only is exibithed the display 0, if I change the Solaris configuration to xinerama, when capture, the guy can see all display, but select only the display 0 (the cursor don't go to display 1 or right screen). What I can do to fix this problem ?! All blastwave packages are current (Feb 17, 2008). I've been using CSW's cups for years but recently had a problem printing multi page docs. My printing needs are small so I'm not sure how long the problem has existed as I usually print one or two pages with no problems. It's 3 or more that are a problem. What happens is that one or two pages comes through OK but the third (and sometimes the second) stops printing half way through and there it hangs. The print job remains in the cups queue until everything is cleared and reset. I've had a similar problem a few years ago and it was determined by someone on the list to be libgcrypt using the wrong /dev/random ... or something like that. I'm not sure how libgcrypt was determined to be the problem but a new/updated version certainly fixed it. I have the current version of libgcrypt (1.4.0, circa 20071213) but can't roll back to test as I don't have a previous version. Does anyone else have a similar problem or any idea how to fix it. The software is all compliant with the well established SVR4 UNIX standards and therefore it works very well with full file logging. Every file or directory touched or created is logged into /var/sadm/install/contents along with all files in the entire system. So you may not be hapy with trying to read that file. It is large and very very detailed. For any given package you can use the standard software tracking tools built into Solaris. Try the following to see a really detailed report on what is in a given package : pkgchk -l CSWfoo That may be overwhelming also. So try this : pkgchk -l CSWfoo | grep Pathname | cut -f2 -d\: > Also, is there a procedure in place to remove a package installed > using Blastwave? If so, what is it? Again, the standard tools here are your friend. Please learn the standards because they will always work. Use pkgrm CSWfoo to remove any package cleanly. Be careful because pkgrm will also remove any package in the machine if you ask it too. Blastwave's pkg-get is just a wrapper on Solaris' pkgadd tool, so there's not a specific log file. you can take a look at system files located under /var/sadm/... > Also, is there a procedure in place to remove a package installed > using Blastwave? If so, what is it? "pkg-get -r packagename", which is the same of "pkgrm packagename". there's no way to recursively delete all the dependencies of a package you are removing. I run pkg-get to install it, and it tells me I need to upgrade some png app or something. I run the command it recommends, and in the process of upgrading various packages, it tells me that pkg-get itself needs to be upgraded. Is it safe to let it upgrade itself? Or when I say "yes" that it's okay to uninstall it (prior to it installing the latest version), will it no longer be able to upgrade itself (as it's been removed)? Hope that's clear. There was a problem with earlier versions on pkg-get in that they may remove wget from under itself and then we are stuck not able to upgrade. On Solaris 10 you should not have the problem because there is generally a copy of wget in /usr/sfw/bin and pkg-get is mighty cunning at looking around for things like that. :-) The absolute safe thing to do is something like this : cd /tmp /opt/csw/bin/pkg-get -U /opt/csw/bin/pkg-get -d pkg_get pkgrm CSWpkgget pkgadd -d ./pkg_get-3.8.4-SunOS5.8-all-CSW.pkg Now you have the latest ... life is good. Here are a couple more: I'm trying to get Zen Cart working on our Solaris 10 web server which runs Apache 2.0.58. When I run the Zen Cart installer, it gives me the following screen: http://people.haverford.edu/auser/zen.jpg It shows two important things: that MySQL support is not enabled, and that the PHP version is 5.1.4. Working with some others here, we believe the cause of the MySQL support not being enabled is that PHP was installed previously without support for MySQL. I had hoped to install a newer version of PHP with MySQL support, so I installed the php5 package from Blastwave. The installation seemed to go fine, and I stopped and then restarted Apache, but when I look at that Zen Cart installer screen, it is still showing the old version of PHP. What do I need to do to get Apache to use the latest install of PHP (the Blastwave install)? The httpd.conf file is pointing to "modules/libphp5.so" and that file is the same as it was before I ran the Blastwave installer (the Blastwave install). Should it be a different file? Or would that file not need to be updated? I did a "find" for libphp5.so, and there is only the one version of it. Obviously, I only expect help with the Blastwave portion of this problem, but if anyone has thoughts on the other issues that are a part of it, feel free to weigh in. :-) Maybe I'll tell you about my ImageMagick problem sometime, since I installed that from Blastwave, too, and have some problems there, as well. I'll save that for later, though. :-) Douglas Douglas S. IIRC, it won't recreate files that Solaris believes to be already installed. The file to check when you want to reconfigure your modules is /opt/csw/php5/lib/php.ini. - C. We already have mysql 5 installed from a non-Blastwave installation. If I choose to let the installer go ahead and install mysql 5 so that I can get phpmyadmin on the system, will doing so screw up our existing mysql databases and their interactions with Apache and various Perl scripts that refer to them? If not, and I can go ahead with the install, will I be able to configure phpmyadmin to use our existing mysql installation? Thanks! Douglas Douglas S. The objective of the Blastwave project has not changed since day zero when one Solaris user needed help from another Solaris user and that is how myself and Phil Brown started all this. Ever since then we have lists that are internal to all the people working on the project and then we have public lists for various other things. Mailists for users who can ask questions. Do you really want to hear and see all the traffic related to me trying to get the IDMAP and NSS Using LDAP from ADS with RFC2307bis Schema Extensions in Samba 3.0.28 ?? Not very likely. Even worse ... that sort of traffic can clog up the users mail lists that are just trying to get the job done. > Debian-devel, Gnome-devel, Opensolaris-devel, > Linux-Kernel, all those developer mailing lists are archived and the > archives are open to the public. Not all mailists in OpenSolaris.org are public lists. Not all lists in Debian ( Linux by the way ) are public either. > I am a system administrator, not a developer, but it is very useful > for me to look over these lists every few weeks. You should have a conf file that look like so : url=http://blastwave.network.com/csw/unstable #------------------------------------------------------------- # If you need to use a proxy then configure the next few lines #ftp_proxy=http://192.168.35.7:8080 #http_proxy=http://192.168.35.7:8080 #export http_proxy ftp_proxy # #------------------------------------------------------------- # If you want to keep a record of each time you ever do # a catalog update or package fetch then use the next line. # Be sure to create the directory yourself ! Just leave # them commented out in order to ensure that each package and # metafile data is checked for integrity via an MD5 hash. #use_gpg=false #use_md5=false Then just run /opt/csw/bin/pkg-get -U followed by /opt/csw/bin/pkg-get -c | grep -v Not That will show you every thing you have installed as well as the revsions. It seems many of those items I'm missing were in the CSWphp5 package: grep sysvshm.so /var/sadm/install/contents /opt/csw/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/sysvshm.so f none 0755 root bin 23000 43550 1173974875 CSWphp5 but not in the installation today. Anyone have any ideas as to what's up with that directory? Interestingly enough, I did the same thing (upgrade php5 to add php5_gd) on January 25th to another Solaris 9 system and it completed without any problems and I have all the stuff in that extension directory as expected. Unfortunately I didn't save an upgrade log of the process so I don't know if all those pieces from no-debug-non-zts-20060613 where actually in the CSWphp5 package. thanks, Joe Kwan jkwan at jpl.nasa.gov From aaron at ernieball.com Thu Feb 7 17:35:52 2008 From: aaron at ernieball.com (Aaron Wilson) Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2008 08:35:52 -0800 Subject: [csw-users] evince doesn't print? That probably got addressed over a year ago now though. Been using Evince for awhile now with no problems. One thing that came to mind is we use Cups for the printing. Been there .. done that and got the t-shirt too. At this point I am going to forward this email into the users mailist at blastwave.org and get people involved. I am going to do this because the guys that know MySQL back to front and in their sleep hang out there and I know that they will see this and possibly attack it with hammers and a fine tooth comb. Also, the guys inside Blastwave know that I am up to my ears fixing a subversion server problem and I can't stop and play right now. Let's get some other people involved mmmkay ? I did as you said, and it went perfectly. I then ran the pkg-get -u again, and it said wget needed upgrading, so I did the same steps you described for wget, and it worked fine, too. (I *did* first have to gunzip the wget package, though). Would it have been safe to let "pkg-get -u" upgrade wget? Or could it have caused a problem, too? Thanks! I have had a similar situation with openldap, Installed a piece of software that required openldap, and I went ahead and let the pkg-get update the openldap package... I got openldap back up and running in about 4 hours... turns out the installation of the new package wrote over some of my files and changed permissions on a bunch of others..... PLUS the new default set up ldap to run at boot. So.... Moral --- backup your system if you wish to upgrade and ask before you press the "yes" button. Debian-devel, Gnome-devel, Opensolaris-devel, Linux-Kernel, all those developer mailing lists are archived and the archives are open to the public. I am a system administrator, not a developer, but it is very useful for me to look over these lists every few weeks. I can learn about the further direction of development. I can see how unstable the unstable branch really is this week. Very often it helps me to solve/avoid problems. Of course you have every right to have your private discussions - perhaps there could be two developer lists? We were always just trying to keep all of out long winded and very technical discussions from clogging up the world. If you want to join in the project and maybe do some port work then you too can become another Solaris user that just wants to help another Solaris user. Being the newb that I am, I make an assumption that everyone uses a script called "cswpkg" to keep their software installations up to date and that everyone uses a "master" file that contains the list of installed software. If the above assumption is correct, I have to ask why when I ran the script, did it delete all of my emacs installation leaving only the Athena Tool Kit? Further, having gone through about 50 systems after running the cswpkg script, I found that at least two new packages that it had installed were gone. How can that happen when they all use the > same script and master file? Not sure what you mean by cswpkg. Do you mean /opt/csw/bin/pkg-get ? You should have a conf file that look like so : url=http://blastwave.network.com/csw/unstable #------------------------------------------------------------- # If you need to use a proxy then configure the next few lines #ftp_proxy=http://192.168.35.7:8080 #http_proxy=http://192.168.35.7:8080 #export http_proxy ftp_proxy # #------------------------------------------------------------- # If you want to keep a record of each time you ever do # a catalog update or package fetch then use the next line. # Be sure to create the directory yourself ! Like so : # mkdir -m 0700 /var/spool/pkg-get # #PKGGET_DOWNLOAD_DIR=/var/spool/pkg-get/pkg-get.$$ #------------------------------------------------------------- # On Solaris 10 and upwards this will restric the install to # the global zone only. #PKGADDFLAGS=-G #------------------------------------------------------------- # To disable use of gpg or md5, uncomment these.
