I have to agree with you, I use gar to build and it is still a problem.
the subversion package, is/was my PITA for this problem.
Perl, Python are built using Studio, Ruby is built with GCC
I had to Hack up a "fix" to change the makefiles to be GCC computible.
this worked without a problem. if you would like to see what I did,
