that is a little overkill. Lets get more specific here:

Since YOU "broke", you now need to ensure that everything that depends
on it, gets recompiled.
Either that, or provide an older compat version of libungif.

Other stuf that still works, can be left alone, even if it uses
standard "old libx11".
