Picking up an old thread that got lost in my mailbox...

This is a known bug that also affects (at least) OSX[1].  I'm
determining how much tampering is required to produce the requisite
fix.  The other option is to patch out the troublesome test file.
Time availability may decide the outcome.  I've got a test build
running right now that will hopefully strip out the ebcdic handling
support.  If that works, I'll build the autoconf support next.
