[csw-maintainers] shoud STRIP_LIBTOOL = 1 solve the problem?

Strip libtool 'fixes' libtool in many cases but doesn't preclude it
from being used entirely.  In your case it looks as though a .la file
you're relying on isn't playing nicely.  As it's outside of the
control of your package, you should see about fixing it in the package
that owns it.  Looking to see what's wrong with it first might save
some time.
