I gradually upgraded from j to k, testing and indeed, k seems to work! I 
can build on all platforms and tests pass on sparc 9, 10 and 11.

I have some packaging errors I will investigate, but the outlook is 
promising.

I will let you know if I can fix the packaging issues or if I need help, 
then we can decide the next steps.
