This is due to gnome-terminal being optimized for linux. There is a
bug on gnomes bugzilla which describes this behaviour on solaris.
One person got it to work fast by writing a streams kernel module...

I'm simply using xterm86 as my standard terminal-emulator, since
it does everything I need.
Who needs tabs in a terminal emulator? Use screen ;-)
