i did an upgrade of the verison number in the mediawiki package, which then
resulted, according to phil, in:

what in gar might have changed so upgrading the version number of mediawiki
gave such a result?

hmm.
well actually it seems that current package in catalog does not have
the .git problem. so yes perjaps there is a bug in later versions of
gar

version used in 2009 did not have git use
